The Dental Implant Process

placement
During your dental implant placement, your doctor will make a small incision in your gums to securely place the dental implant in the jaw. Next, the area will be cleaned and sutured to begin the healing process, ensuring a comfortable recovery.

Healing
The incision site will be healed in 1-2 weeks. However, it will take 3-6 months for the implant to bond with your jawbone. We will schedule a few check-ups throughout the process to confirm you are healing properly.

Restoration
After the implant bonds with your jaw, we will place your custom-designed restoration, typically a dental crown. It securely attaches to the implant with an abutment. Your smile will be fully restored once your new tooth is in place!

Education
Ranked among the top of his class and chosen for the prestigious Air Force Advanced Education in General Dentistry program, Dr. Eck brings a caliber of training rarely found outside of specialty practices. His advanced experience includes dental implants, oral surgery, prosthodontics, and cosmetic dentistry.
Dr. Mark A. Penshorn graduated from Samuel Clemens High School and Texas A&M University. He has practiced dentistry in the greater Schertz area since graduating from the UT Dental School in San Antonio in 1982.

Do Dental Implants Stop Bone Loss?
Yes. After losing a tooth, your jaw will no longer be stimulated by the natural pressure of chewing and biting. This causes bone loss to occur and also weakens the jaw bone. When the dental implant post is placed, it will bond directly into the jaw bone and act as an artificial tooth root. This titanium “tooth root” transmits the force of chewing and biting through the dental crown and into your jawbone just like a real tooth would, keeping it healthy and strong.
How Are Dental Implants Made?
Titanium dental implants are made in trusted laboratories that supply a wide selection of pre-selected standard post sizes. The crown, on the other hand, is a custom-made tooth replacement. This ensures you get a personalized result that meets your needs and wishes. Most crowns are crafted out of porcelain, which is durable and matches your natural smile. Once your crown is ready, we will complete the procedure by securely attaching your implant crown in place.
How Long Will My Dental Implant Last?
When placed properly and maintained with care through good at-home hygiene and regular checkups, dental implants can last for 30 years or more. In fact, it’s common for patients to keep their implants for the rest of their lives. The implant restoration, however, may not last as long. Restorations such as dental crowns or overdentures take on regular wear and tear from chewing, biting, and more. After some time, the restoration may need to be replaced to keep your smile healthy and functional. By coming in for regular exams, your dentist can check to ensure your restoration is in great condition.
